In Loving Memory of Nick Monios

Nick Monios was a war hero, union executive, civic leader, and inspiration to friends, family and anyone else who had the pleasure of crossing paths with Nick. On March 31, 2018 at the age of 89, Nick Monios passed away after a long fight with pancreatic cancer.

Nick spent his early years in Pennsylvania during the Great Depression. He was a hard worker from the time he was kid - Nick delivered milk, shined shoes and set up pins at the local bowling alley. Penn State offered nick a football scholarship and later he would go on to play semi-professional football for Coach Art Rooney of the Pittsburg Steelers.

In the 1950s Nick joined the army and served with the 3rd Infantry Division as a machine gunner on the front lines. During the war Nick was shot twice and received two Purple Heart medals for being wounded in battle. His valor on the battlefield also earned him the Silver Star and Bronze Star – two of the United States highest honors for courage in combat.

During his 42 year career with the union and Local 250, Nick served in many key roles including Financial Secretary, Treasurer and President of the California Pipe Trades. In the 80s and 90s Nick Monios was instrumental in helping Local Union 250 members become aware of the dangers of the asbestos they were exposed to on various jobsites. He chose The Paul Law Firm to speak with members and help get justice for those who were afflicted with asbestos related injuries. In a time when union workers didn't really understand the full extent of the damage that asbestos would actually cause, Nick was instrumental in educating and aiding his fellow brothers and sisters.

Nick was also dedicated to his church, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church. He was a prodigious fund raiser which enabled his church to build its new sanctuary, school, and community center. He served as the church president for seven consecutive terms.

Nick is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Linda. He is also survived by his children Melanie, Jim, David, and Melissa. His extended family includes all of those who call him Uncle Nick, including Jimmy, Gus, and Peter Eleopoulos and their eight children and all of the many people who have been inspired by Nick over the many years.
