Mesothelioma Mortality Rates Vary Widely Across The Globe

A new report studying the mortality rates of mesothelioma from 2009 to 2013 found that countries vary significantly. The report was compiled by Omar Abdel-Rahman, an oncologist from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. The study shows that the difference between the least and greatest number of mesothelioma related deaths is close to a tenfold discrepancy between nations.

The ten countries with the greatest number of per capita deaths (between 2009-2013) per 100,000 people from mesothelioma include:

  1. United Kingdom – 6.25
  2. The Netherlands – 5.29
  3. Australia – 4.93
  4. Switzerland – 3.84
  5. Belgium – 3.37
  6. Malta – 3.29
  7. Croatia – 3.12
  8. Finland – 2.66
  9. Norway – 2.91
  10. Luxembourg – 2.49

Countries with the least number of per capita mesothelioma deaths

  1. Portugal - 0.64
  2. Latvia – 0.67
  3. Hungary – 0.69
  4. Mexico – 0.71
  5. Czech Republic – 0.71
  6. Argentina – 0.86
  7. Belize – 0.86
  8. Poland – 1.08
  9. Israel – 1.17
  10. Japan – 1.35

The United States falls in the center of the pack with a per capita death rate of 1.47 per 100,000. While the United States does have a lower per capita number, the US does have one of the greatest numbers of deaths in terms of actual people who die from mesothelioma because of its huge population.

The United Kingdom has the highest number of mesothelioma deaths. Researchers hypothesize that this may be due to the rebuilding effort after World War II. Because of the enormous number of structures that had to be rebuilt following Germany's bombing campaigns, asbestos was much more prevalent than elsewhere in the world.

The mortality rates provide a look into how the agressive asbestos-related cancer has impacted people around the world, the results may not fully track for the accuracy of the national data where the statistics were collected. Abdel-Rahman's data may also be skewed towards places where the population is so small that incidental mesothelioma deaths look much more significant on a per capita basis.
