Asbestos Sprayers Are Subject to a Higher Lifetime Risk of Mesothelioma

A Finnish study published in Safety and Health at Work studied mesothelioma incidence rates in four separate occupational groups. The report found that asbestosis sprayers or the workers who actually applied the asbestos to a product are more than 100 times more likely to suffer from mesothelioma than the general population. The asbestos spray contained concentrations of up to 50%.

Pia Nynas, an author of the study states that “The SIR for mesothelioma varied from about threefold to >100 fold in the different cohorts. Asbestos sprayers were at the highest risk of mesothelioma and lung cancer.” The study broke the exposures sown into four segments. Even when compared to the heavy exposure category, the sprayers were far worse off. It’s speculated that this is because of concentration levels and amounts of exposure in spraying the dangerous natural mineral.
