Canadian Researchers Link Thickness of Mesothelioma Tumors to Survival Rates

A study out of Canada and published in the European Respiratory Journal revealed that the thickness of the mesothelioma tumor can be used to better predict survival rates. The research studied 65 patients diagnosed with mesothelioma and undergoing surgery for mesothelioma after radiation therapy (SMART) documented that “tumor thickness had a significant impact on overall survival and disease-free survival in univariate analysis.”

Ultimately this research may help medical staff decide on the proper treatment regimens for mesothelioma patients. The idea would be that better predictors could allow doctors to more intelligently determine which patients were better candidates for more radical forms or multimodal forms of treatment.
