Cancer Drug May Have Promising Application For Mesothelioma Patients

Despite the unfortunate fact that mesothelioma is an incurable disease, there are a greater number of patients who are living longer lives with a greater quality of life. NBC News reports that a new drug produced by Novartis has been extremely successful in treating those suffering from chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). The new drug, Gleevec helped 83% of CML patients taking the drug, live for an additional 10 years with minimal side-effects.

Gleevec was used as an alternative to the highly toxic chemotherapy treatment protocol typically used. The Novartis study was so successful that the clinical studies were halted so that all patients could receive the FDA approved drug.

While the drug has not yet been used in mesothelioma yet there is some hope that it will have applications for the asbestos caused disease based on similarities in treatment protocols.
