Firefighters More At Risk For Certain Types of Cancers

For the brave heroes who serve as firefighters in Boston, the greatest danger isn’t what you think it might be. Because firefighters run into burning building while everyone else runs away you may think burns pose the greatest threat to firefighters but in Boston it is cancer that poses the greatest risk.

Boston Magazine reported that NIOSH calculated health data on 30,000 firefighters from several different cities. The study concluded that firefighters were more at risk for digestive, oral, respiratory, and urinary cancers. For firefighters who served in the 1960s and 1970s were at especially high risk for mesothelioma, a particularly aggressive cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. During the 60s and 70s firefighter gear was made with the heat resistant asbestos fibers. The respirator, trousers and jacket all contained asbestos. Furthermore, responding to fires at older buildings containing asbestos subjects firefighters to the additional danger of breathing in the disturbed fibers.
