New Blood Test May Allow Early Detection of Mesothelioma

One of the most challenging aspects of mesothelioma is that symptoms do not surface until the aggressive cancer is too advanced to allow doctors the chance to be provide effective treatment. Because of the 20 to 50 year latency period it is common for decades to go by between exposure and diagnosis.

USA Today reports that a new breakthrough from researchers at Purdue University have developed a process to study blood which could facilitate cancer detection with simple blood test.

The team at Purdue found a way to test for the phosphoprotein bio-marker by adding the blood sample to an ultra high-speed centrifuge which separates the plasma from the blood. Previously, attempting to identify the phosphoprotein was a very invasive and expensive procedure.

While this test is a few years away from routine use it could one day become the standard test for early cancer detection. Currently the new method has only been tested with a small number of breast cancer patients but researchers are optimistic about the potential for a multitude of applications. "The exciting part is it's a blood test that really offers the potential to detect many different diseases," said Ratliff.

We are optimistic about the help this test could provide to victims of mesothelioma. Early detection could make a big difference in creating survival rates.
