Crocidolite Asbestos

Crocidolite Riebeckite Asbestos

Crocidolite is one type of riebeckite (a sodium-rich member of the amphibole group of minerals). Crocidolite also is referred to as “blue asbestos,” as it typically has a bluish tint. Its Mohs hardness is 5.0–6.0, meaning that it is in the middle compared to other minerals. It is often translucent to nearly opaque. It was named after German explorer Emil Riebeck (1853-1885).

Crocidolite Asbestos Most Hazardous

While all forms of asbestos can cause disease, crocidolite is considered to be the most hazardous due to its chemical properties and physiology. Miners of this mineral have suffered a high fatality rate due to mesothelioma.
