Researchers Working on a Less Invasive Diagnostic Tool for Mesothelioma

In a study published in the Biochemical and Biophysical Research Journal, researchers found promising results for a new less invasive tool in diagnosing mesothelioma. The method involves combining the blood levels of mesothelin (a biomarker for mesothelioma) and measuring portions of a soluble protein called Megakaryocyte Potentiating Factor (MPF).

The German Researchers, developed a cost effective way to detect MPF with a test called MPF ELISA. ELISA is an acronym for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The test combined with the mesothlin bio-marker makes the test more accurate.

“There is still a lack of validated biomarkers for the early detection of mesothelioma. The most promising marker so far is mesothelin, but a single marker is not sufficient to reach adequate sensitivity.”

When the MPF ELISA Test was combined with mesothelin blood levels it increased the overall accuracy of the test by 3% - from 77% to 80%. Based on these results researchers are hopeful that several other less invasive tests may be combined with the mesothelim blood and ELISA test to make diagnosing mesothelioma less invasive.
