California suffers more mesothelioma deaths than any other state in the union. Between 2001 and 2010 California recorded 2,637 mesothelioma deaths. To get an idea of where this ranks compared to other states, the state with the second highest number of deaths is Florida where the state recorded 1,713 mesothelioma deaths during that same period.
Like the rest of the United States and countries around the world, approximately 80% of all asbestos exposure is primary occupational exposure while 20% is due to secondary non-occupational exposure. Both primary and secondary exposures have extremely long latency periods of anywhere from 10 to 50 years.
In California there is a modified statute of limitations (the amount of time you have to file a claim) to file your asbestos claim. The statute does not run from the date of exposure but rather from the date of disability or death. Once you have been declared disabled or a loved one passes away there is only ONE year to file a claim. Unfortunately, this doesn’t even give a family enough time to mourn the loss of a loved one. Because dealing with mesothelioma is so costly, from the loss of income to snowballing of medical bills it’s important to get your claim started sooner than later. A good law firm will do all the heavy lifting so you can spend precious time with loved ones and receive the compensation you deserve to take care of family and finances.
