Research Shows Exposure to Asbestos While Young Increases Risk of Mesothelioma

While it has long been known that exposure to asbestos can develop into mesothelioma, it is less clear what causes one person who was exposed to develop the cancer while another exposed person does not. A new report published in the BMJ Occupational and Environmental Medicine studied 1,196 male occupational exposure cases of mesothelioma spanning from 1987 to 2006 and then compared those cases with 2,400 other cases. The study sought to explore the link between age of occupational exposure to asbestos and the development of mesothelioma.

Researchers stated, “We found that an increase in asbestos exposure during more than forty years before diagnosis, or at 15 to 20 years old, had the strongest impact on the risk of pleural mesothelioma. As a result, subjects who accumulated asbestos fibers in early career were at higher risk than those who accumulated them at the end of their career or at a constant level over the entire career.”

The scientists working on the study hoped that the information they found could help categorize risks and promote additional screening for those exposed on job site at a young age.
