CDC Highlights Ongoing Asbestos Exposure Risk

In the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) the Center for Disease Control noted that the continuing rise in malignant mesothelioma related deaths in the under 55 age segment shows a continuing exposure to asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma deaths also increased for the over 85 year old category.

Despite regulatory efforts and educational development malignant mesothelioma deaths have continued to increase. The rising number of deaths in the younger population is a stark reminder that there must be a greater effort made to ensure proper precautions are made with existing structures that contain asbestos.

Inspection data collected at construction sites over a 25 year period starting in 1979 showed that at least 20% of samples exceeded the OSHA permissible exposure limits. Furthermore, unlike 55 other countries where asbestos has been banned, the deadly mineral is still imported into the United States and still continues to be put into use.
