Standardization Needed For Peritoneal Treatment Protocols

Peritoneal Mesothelioma which effects the lining of the abdomen rather than the lungs occurs in approximately 20% of all mesothelioma patients. The traditional treatment protocol involves cytoreductive surgery to remove the mesothelioma tumors from the abdominal lining followed by intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to eliminate residual cancer cells. According to a study published in the International Journal of Hyperthermia while there are a minimal number of ways to perform surgery there are many more ways to administer chemotherapy. Authors of the study are calling for a narrowing of treatment protocols with respect to administering the chemotherapy.

The author of the report stated that, “Although there is near universal standardization regarding the cytoreductive surgery, we are still lacking a much-needed standardization amongst the various intraperitoneal chemotherapy treatment modalities used today in clinical practice.” Some of the various drug treatments for administering chemotherapy include Alimta, cisplatin, carboplatin, gemcitabine, methotrexate, or vinorelbine. Each drug requires different doses, concentrations, storage protocols amongst other variables. The wide arrange of variations may lead to sub-optimal outcomes and greater margins for error.
